“Maketi Ples” is an exhibition and ‘market place’ featuring the fine work of Pacific Island artists and artisans. Hosted by Pacific Islands Trade & Invest. For the past 2 years Maketi Ples has showcased the diversity and creativity of the Pacific communities.
“Maketi Ples” is a term coined from two words found in every-day language in the Pacific Islands region. “Maketi” is a Samoan word for Market. “Ples” is a tokpisin word for place – “Maketi Ples” is simply expressed or translated as market place.
Pacific Islands Trade & Invest believes that initiatives such as “Maketi Ples” are a crucial step in the support of the creative arts in the Pacific region. By investing in the promotion of these skills, we are promoting the placement of a contemporary value on the traditional knowledge and expressions of culture of the Pacific communities.
“Maketi Ples” includes creative works by highly skilled artists which includes women and men artisans, urban individuals and rural communities. It is our objective that “Maketi Ples” will benefit the creator communities of the Pacific.
